Neck Pain and Headaches: What's the Connection?

A headache and a sore neck can happen together, but the order and pattern matter. The neck is not automatically the cause just because it feels tender.

Several patterns can look similar

Neck discomfort may occur alongside migraine or tension-type headache. Some headaches have a contribution from the neck, but that requires assessment; it cannot be established by pressing a tender muscle or reading a symptom list.

More than one presentation may be relevant. It is useful to distinguish the headache symptoms from the neck symptoms rather than force both into a single explanation.

What should I record?

  • Whether neck discomfort begins before, during or after the headache.
  • Headache frequency, duration, severity and impact.
  • Associated nausea, light or sound sensitivity, visual changes or other symptoms.
  • Any consistent relationship to movement, tasks or medicines.

A diary helps provide a clearer account to your GP and other treating practitioners. It does not confirm a diagnosis by itself.

Does treating the neck address the whole headache?

Not necessarily. Local comfort and the broader headache pattern are separate things to review. If a headache has been medically diagnosed, continue the agreed management and discuss any changes with your medical clinician.

Where appropriate, acupuncture or soft tissue care may be discussed as an adjunct. Measure headache days and impact, not only whether the neck feels different immediately after treatment.

What if the pattern changes?

A new headache, a progressively worsening pattern or a headache unlike your usual episodes needs medical assessment. Do not assume an established neck problem explains every future headache.

See the Headache & Migraine page for the wider assessment conversation, and Neck Pain for neck and arm symptoms.

Urgent warning symptoms

Seek emergency care for a sudden severe unusual headache, stroke-like symptoms, or headache with fever, confusion and marked neck stiffness. Significant head or neck trauma also needs urgent assessment.
