Electroacupuncture

Electroacupuncture connects selected acupuncture needles to a device that delivers controlled electrical stimulation. It is an option where appropriate, not an automatic addition to treatment.

What happens during electroacupuncture?

After needle placement, leads connect selected needles to the device. The stimulation is introduced and adjusted with your feedback. You remain able to ask for it to be reduced or stopped.

Not every needle is necessarily connected. The selection is discussed in relation to your presentation and the treatment plan.

What does it feel like?

People may notice pulsing, tingling or a rhythmic sensation around the treated area. Sensations depend on the settings and location. It should not be painful or something you feel obliged to endure.

Stronger stimulation is not automatically more useful. Tell Rory if you are uncomfortable, anxious or noticing an unexpected sensation.

Why might it be considered?

Controlled stimulation allows a different way of applying needle stimulation than manual adjustment alone. Rory may discuss it for a relevant presentation after considering suitability, preferences and evidence.

It is not inherently necessary for pain care and does not prove that a stronger physiological effect will produce a better result. Ordinary acupuncture or another form of care may be preferred.

Screening comes before use

Tell Rory about a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, heart conditions, seizure history, pregnancy, reduced sensation and relevant medicines or health conditions. These can affect whether electrical stimulation is appropriate; additional medical advice or a different technique may be needed.

The usual needling risks also apply, including soreness, bruising, bleeding and less common serious complications. Consent and comfort are checked throughout treatment.

How will we know whether to continue?

Review agreed markers such as comfort, movement or the activity affected by the symptoms. Treatment can be adapted or stopped when it is not worthwhile. Electroacupuncture is not a fixed course or a reason for more frequent appointments by itself.
