Moxibustion in Adelaide

Moxibustion uses processed mugwort, called moxa, as a source of warming stimulation. Rory may consider it selectively at Mile End South or Valley View, rather than as a routine part of every appointment.

What is moxa used for in an appointment?

Moxa provides heat to a selected area or acupuncture point. Rory explains the proposed application, traditional rationale and practical precautions before asking for consent.

Its role in traditional Chinese medicine is not a claim that heat corrects an underlying medical condition. Choosing a warming technique depends on the individual assessment, not simply feeling cold or having pain.

What might I experience?

The intended sensation is warmth, not burning or pain. Moxa may also produce an odour and smoke. Tell Rory if either is uncomfortable, if the area feels too hot or if you notice skin irritation.

The application can be adjusted or stopped. You do not need to tolerate heat or smoke to complete an appointment, and another option may be more appropriate.

Heat and smoke need particular care

Discuss heat sensitivity, reduced skin sensation, fragile or irritated skin, respiratory problems, allergies, pregnancy and relevant medical history before use. These may affect suitability or the precautions required.

Risks include irritation, allergic reactions, burns and infection after skin injury. Report unexpected pain, blistering or a skin reaction and seek appropriate advice. Do not copy a clinical heat technique at home without suitable guidance.

You can decline moxibustion. It is not necessary to accept it in order to have acupuncture or discuss other care.

What can be said about the evidence?

Research relates to particular conditions and techniques; it should not be extended to every use of moxa. Small studies and risk of bias can limit confidence in findings. This page does not claim a condition-specific benefit.

Discuss the evidence relevant to your presentation, alternatives and how any response will be reviewed. Moxibustion does not replace medical assessment, prescribed medicines or rehabilitation.
